Canberra

Canberra is Australia’s capital city and home to over 325,000 people. Many international visitors bypass Canberra altogether, preferring to explore the more cosmopolitan population centres along the eastern seaboard.

Located some 300 km southwest of Sydney, Canberra has a reputation as a city full of politicians and bureaucrats and to a large extent this is true. It also has a reputation as a boring city, although for the first time visitor there are some interesting sights to see.

Canberra is small, over endowed with public buildings and beautiful parklands, and generally free of major traffic or pollution problems. Very well planned and laid out, Canberra is built around the entirely artificial Lake Burley Griffin, which is home to some great parklands and some large monolithic buildings like the High Court.

Canberra has a casino, plenty of shopping centres and a reasonable range of entertainment options for its population.

The main sights to see in Canberra are the impressive parliament house, and the smaller but more graceful old parliament house that preceded it.  The size, scale and sheer waste of money represented by the new parliament building is just amazing – many Australians visit Canberra just to marvel at how their tax dollars are thrown away on such grandiose Canberra buildings.

Canberra’s excellent War Memorial is home to an impressive display of war memorabilia and some interesting battle diorama’s. History buffs should set aside a full day to explore the museum and the adjoining memorial featuring the names of those killed in past wars.

Canberra is also home to many large and impressive embassies, many based into a kind of “Embassy Row” where you can see buildings unique to each country side by side. Most Canberra city tours take you along here simply because there just isn't much else to see!

Every spring there is a renowned flower and garden display around Lake Burley Griffin which is worth seeing if you like flowers.

You can visit Canberra on a day tour from Sydney if you don’t wish to spend too much time there – I have taken this tour myself and it is a long day but you will get to see most of the city’s highlights in a short time. For a more leisurely stay consider spending a few days and either renting a car or using the Canberra explorer sightseeing buses to get around.

Canberra airport connects with other Australian and overseas destinations.
