Sydney's Chinatown
By Steve Willard

It's early evening and the streets are coming alive as the offices and shops empty and countless neon signs flicker to life, promising Chinese, Indian, Thai, Korean, Vietnamese and other dishes. Barbequed ducks hang enticingly in restaurant windows and the smell of Vietnamese Pho mingles with the odour of sandalwood from burning incense sticks.

It looks, smells, sounds and even tastes like you are in Asia - however this is Chinatown in the inner Sydney suburb of Haymarket.

A suburb that is home to endless Asian grocery stores, restaurants, food halls and bubble tea vendors. As well as the local Chinese population, Chinatown is home to hordes of overseas students who live in one of the many high rise apartment buildings in the area or just come here to enjoy their favourite dish from home.

Chinatown is well serviced by public transport and a great place to stay with numerous hotels and serviced apartments available to suit most budgets. There is a monorail station right opposite the famous Paddy's Markets which links you with nearby Darling Harbour and Sydney's CBD.

There is also a light rail link connecting Chinatown with the Star City Casino and on to Glebe. Access to Circular Quay and Sydney harbour is also easy - Sydney's Central Train Station is a 5 minute stroll from Chinatown.

There are plenty of attractions to keep you in Chinatown, however. There are endless restaurants and eating places ranging from top - notch 5 star Chinese restaurants to the popular $6.90 meals available in the Dixon Food Court.

There is a pedestrian mall in Dixon Street with plenty of shopping opportunities. On Thursday, Friday and weekends the world famous Paddy's Markets open the doors and bring crowds from all over the city to enjoy shopping for souvenirs, clothes, food and much more.

The adjacent Market City shopping centre offers several levels of shops as well as a Cinema complex. While you're there don't forget to check out the Market City Tavern - this friendly little tavern has poker machines, reasonably priced drinks and plenty of free snacks for visitors.

A short walk from Chinatown is the popular Chinese Gardens, one of the few places in the world outside China where you can experience a traditional Chinese garden.
