Sydney - Circular Quay
By Steve Willard
Circular Quay is Sydney’s most well known central transport hub, located in Sydney Harbour and facing the Sydney Harbour Bridge to the left and the Sydney Opera House to the right.
Once known as Sydney Cove and the site of the landing of the first fleet, today Circular Quay is an arrival and departure point for Sydney ferries, has its own train station and also serves as a bus interchange.
Circular Quay is a great starting point for exploring the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and The Rocks. The Quay area itself is always busy – commuters and tourists coming and going on ferries, lots of cafes and eateries serving hot treats and crowds milling around to enjoy the sights.
It is common to find buskers or street performers putting on a show around the Quay looking for a dollar or two from passers by. Some days you may see a reggae musician complete with drums and guitar, other days Aboriginal people playing the Didgeridoo.
Other forms of street theatre including human statues and comics can also be seen.
From the Quay it is roughly a 10 minute stroll to the Bridge and The Rocks, on the way passing Sydney’s passenger ship terminal and some great restaurants and viewing points from which to view the Opera House on the other side.
On the walk to the Opera House you pass several modern apartment buildings which were constructed in the late 1990’s much to the dismay of many residents and visitors, to cater for wealthy apartment buyers.

There is also an excellent Quayside outdoor coffee shop which serves up a great latte and a selection of light meals and cakes and is the perfect spot to sit back and watch the activity in the harbour.
One of the great treats of hanging around Circular Quay is simply watching the huge slow ferries and the zippy jetfoil ferries making their way back and forth to the Quay. There are always ferries or tour boats to be seen and this makes for great photo opportunities with the city skyline, the bridge or the Opera House as a background.
Every New Years Eve and Australia Day (26 January) Circular Quays is the place to be to enjoy fireworks and celebrations.
There are a number of hotels in and around the Circular Quay area, amongst them some of Sydney’s finest and most expensive. Spending the night with a view of this fabulous location certainly isn't cheap but you will enjoy views you will never forget.
Due to its prominence as a transport hub, it is simple to get to Circular Quay from pretty much anywhere is Sydney. If you are staying near a train or ferry stop, getting there is a breeze.
On my last visit to Sydney I stayed in Chinatown but took daily early morning walks around Circular Quay by simply hopping on a train at Sydney Central Train Station and hopping off 10 minutes later at Circular Quay.
