The Gold Coast

A favourite spot for overseas and local tourists is the Gold Coast, a sun kissed section of the southeast Queensland coast packed with beaches, hotels, resorts and apartments, lots of shopping and nightlife and even a casino.

The Gold Coast is known for its tropical weather, towering beach front high rise apartment buildings, canal development real estate and tourist attractions such as Movie world and several theme parks.

The Gold Coast city center is south of the Queensland capital Brisbane and adjoins Coolangatta and its twin city Tweed Heads on the Queensland / new South Wales border.  Beach resorts and developments run some 70 km up the coast as far as Surfer’s Paradise.

The apartment developments are so numerous and so imposing on the beachfronts that many argue the area is over developed, however for those that enjoy beach resorts the Gold Coast will not disappoint.

So many people come here from Japan that Japanese is almost the second language in the Gold Coast and many signs are multi lingual. The Gold Coast is also popular with weekenders coming up from the southern capitals for a few days in the sun.

The city is also home to hordes of real estate salesmen trying to sell overpriced homes to unwary visitors, so beware! To the west of the city is a mountain range know as the Gold Coast hinterland, which provides a pleasant backdrop to the city.

The most popular beaches include Broadbeach, Burleigh heads, the Spit and Main Beach. South Stradbroke Island and Surfers Paradise are also popular. There is a bewildering abundance of apartments, resorts and hotels to choose from and many are poorly located to select your location carefully.

When visiting the Gold Coast try to arrange accommodation close to the beach and city center so everything is within walking distance. To go further field you will need to catch a taxi or use a private vehicle. You can get to and from Brisbane by bus or taxi.

There are several local bus services which will get you around the central city area.

You can fly directly into the Gold Coast from Coolangatta airport which is 22 Km south of Surfer’s Paradise. The airport connects to most major Australian cities as well as New Zealand and Asia.
