Melbourne

Melbourne is Australia’s second largest city after Sydney and proclaims itself as the shopping, culinary and sporting capital of the nation. These claims are perennially disputed by Sydney residents, but Melbourne does indeed have a lot to offer on all of these fronts.
Melbourne’s CBD is laid out in a grid alongside the muddy brown Yarra River, its tall buildings and shopping centers surrounded by rabbit warrens of arcades, lanes and small streets. The central city is packed with the many coffee shops and restaurants for which the city is famous, and includes Greek, Italian, Vietnamese and Chinese quarters.
Just across the Yarra River and connected by several bridges is the Southbank area, home to the massive Crown Casino and Hotel and lots of stylish cafes and restaurants. Nearby is the iconic Arts Center, Museum and National Gallery of Victoria. On the outskirts of the city are the huge Telstra Dome, the new Docklands residential area and the beautiful Botanic Gardens and War Memorial.

Melbourne’s inner suburbs are often described as a series of urban villages, many more lively and bohemian that the central city itself. Inner city Richmond offers Vietnamese cuisine and the city’s famous Bridge Road shopping precinct. Collingwood offers more bargain shopping and some good spots to eat. Nearby Carlton is home to melbourne’s Lygon Street restaurant strip while nearby Fitzroy is the home to bohemian types.
South of the Yarra is St Kilda, a bayside suburb with a reputation for its seedy nightlife and fabulous cake shops. Other areas like South Yarra, South Melbourne and Brighton Beach all offer something different for the visitor.
Melbourne’s CBD is serviced by train, bus and the city’s famous trams. Whilst it has a reputation for being colder and wetter than other Australian cities, Melbourne is people friendly, easy to explore, generally safe and claimed to be one of the most liveable cities in the world.
