Perth

Perth, the capital of Western Australia, is the world’s most isolated capital city and closer to Asia than Sydney or Melbourne. Perth has around 1 million residents and receives far fewer tourists than the east coast of Australia.

Perth is a picturesque city and visitors can enjoy excellent views from King’s Park, or from across the Swan River in South Perth.  The central city is situated on the Swan River – which is indeed home to many black swans – and is connected to the southern suburbs by two bridges. The Causeway Bridge connects East Perth via Herrison Island to Victoria Park and the much larger Narrows Bridge connects the West Perth end of the city with South Perth.

You can also travel between Perth via ferry between the ferry terminal near Perth’s Bell Tower and several piers in South Perth. South Perth is home to Perth Zoo and some pleasant foreshore parklands.

Perth has plenty of places to stay, eat and shop although it is very much a 9 – 5 city – after work the CBD becomes deserted and the city is renowned for its dull nightlife. There are a few city pubs and nightclubs to visit but it is very much a case of “make your own fun” most nights of the week.

Perth WA

What nightlife there is can be found in Northbridge, which is just north of Perth Railway Station, or Fremantle, the port city to the south of Perth. There is also the large Burswood Resort and Casino complex in inner city Rivervale, which features a 24 hour casino, bars, restaurants, nightclubs and two hotels. The Burswood complex draws most of the nightlife crowds and can be packed on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Swan River winds through the city from the north eastern suburbs of the city down to Fremantle and offers some excellent opportunities for waterside recreation and sight seeing.

Perth is difficult to explore using public transport – the suburban train network is great for those areas it passes through but the network is not extensive. Perth’s bus network is only really convenient for travel to and from the city – elsewhere services are infrequent and slow, particularly after hours and on weekends.

Taxi cabs are expensive and tend to be unavailable at busy times. Your best bet is to rent a car if you are staying more than a few days.

If you plan to get out and about and explore the city then use our guides to find the best spots – Hotelz Australia has the most comprehensive online coverage on the internet of Perth and its attractions.
