Sydney - Queen Victoria Shopping Arcade
By Steve Willard
The Queen Victoria Building, (QVB), is an impressive Victorian building in Sydney’s CBD showcasing the best of neo-Byzantine architecture from Sydney’s colonial past.
The QVB building takes up an entire city block, bounded by George, Market, York and Druitt Streets.
The QVB is easily accessible by foot from Sydney CBD and has its own nearby underground train station (Town Hall Station).
The building houses a fine selection of up market shops and cafes and is possibly one of the most beautifully ornate shopping arcades in the world.
Designed by architect George McRae, QVB was constructed in 1898 and was originally known as the George Street Market.
The original building featured a concert hall, coffee shops and smal trading shops. Over the years the building detiorated and did not regain its former glory until the complex was restored in the late 1970’s.

When you step inside you immediately notice the huge Centre Dome, consisting of an smaller glass dome and a copper exterior, topped by a cupola.
From outside the building is an attrative yellow hue topped by the magnificent green dome.
The building has four shopping floors, and feature ornate iron railings and beautiful fittings throughout.
Many of the stores within are specialty business or boutiques selling high quality goods – this is no bargain hunter’s paradise!
Outside is the prominent Queen Victoria Statue, which originally stood outside the Irish Parliament builing in Dublin until it was gifted to Australia in 1947.
One look at old Queen Vic and you will see why the Irish were keen to see the back of her. Facilities for visitors include concierge desks on the ground and second floors.
There is a range of QVB merchandise on sale including historical books and souveniers.
Tours of the building are run twice a day – see the concierge desk for details.
