Sydney Harbour
By Steve Willard

Sydney Harbour frames the city of Sydney and its best known attractions – the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney harbour Bridge – and is well known for its beauty and the many opportunities for leisure it offers.

Known as Port Jackson, Sydney Harbour is 19 Km long and has a total area of 55 square Km. With its many coves, curves and turns the total perimeter of the harbour – is you wished to walk it – is 317 Km. Sydney Harbour is considered to be the world’s largest natural harbour.

Sydneysiders will pay almost any amount of money to buy a home that has “harbour views”, and the harbour is home to many expensive and beautiful homes.

The harbour is plied by dozens of ferries carrying across the city from home to work and back. These ferries are a great way to explore the harbour cheaply – just catch one from Circular Quay and take a trip to Taronga Zoo or Manly for a cheap harbour tour !

There are also many commercial ferry boat operators who can provide day or night harbour cruises, with or without food and drink supplied.

You can also catch mini water taxis which run between Darling Harbour, Circular Quay and the Opera House. Prices are high for the novelty value of a water taxi ride however – I was quoted $25 to travel from Darling Harbour to the Opera House. You could purchase a ticket for a one hour harbour cruise on a large boat for that price! Or three tickets to Manly!

Come the weekend the harbour is dotted with sailing boats and small craft enjoying the harbour. Explore the harbour for yourself – there are so many nooks, crannies and vantage points that you could spend months exploring them and still not see everything.

A good spot from which to view the harbour area is from atop Sydney Tower. You can also get a good view of Botany Bay from Sydney airport as you arrive and depart – aircraft take off and land beside Botany Bay.
