Sydney - Taronga Zoo
By Steve Willard
Taronga Zoo has one of the best harbour front locations in Sydney and is one of Australia’s most enjoyable Zoo’s to visit. Even if you are not a zoo aficionado, the views are to die for and it is a good opportunity to enjoy the leafy zoo environs.
The collection of native and exotic plants at Taronga Zoo is as impressive and enjoyable as the animal collection – some of the massive tree ferns are beautiful.
Opened in 1916, the zoo is located in suburban Mosman. You can easily reach the zoo by catching a Taronga Zoo Ferry from Circular Quay. From the ferry pier you take a cable car to the zoo entrance.
There is also a road to the zoo, hence you can visit by bus, taxi or private car.
If you are planning a visit, take the time to search on the internet for a discount coupon – you may save up to 20% on entry fees. Students with ID also receive a discount on the entry price.

Visiting Taronga Zoo is fun for the kids – there are some great attractions including the giraffe enclosure with its great views across to Sydney, the Tiger Pits and an excellent collection of Australian native animals including the rare Platypus.
In 2003 Taronga Zoo became only the second zoo in Australia to breed the Platypus.
Taronga Zoo has 340 species and over 2600 individual animals spread over its sprawling grounds.
There is an excellent nocturnal animal section, a new Asian wildlife enclosure which opened in 2005 as well as ample food and souvenir shopping outlets.
At the time of writing in 2006 Taronga Zoo was in the process of importing a number of Elephants from Thailand, a move that was controversial to some but promises to offer a more suitable home for the elephants.
